This Week at the College of Music: Faculty and Staff Edition - Sept. 15, 2022

Professor of Flute Christina Jennings, Professor of Trumpet Ryan Gardner and Professor of Conducting + Director of Bands Don McKinney traveled to the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts last week, offering flute and trumpet master classes, and working with three of their bands. Says McKinney, “Our connection with LVA started in 2020 during COVID when their band director [John Seaton] contacted me for virtual master classes. Some of our applied woodwind and brass faculty did master classes with their students in fall 2020 through Google Meets, and one of those participants has since joined our college as an undergraduate music education student, studying flute with Christina.” Fantastic!

• How TikTok has changed the music industry: College of Music Instructor of Music Theory + Composition Mike Barnett shares how TikTok has changed the music industry … for better and for worse. “What modern consumers and fans of music may not know is that companies such as Spotify, TikTok, etc., are not music companies, they’re technology companies […] truth is, musicians were far, far better off with the old model because they received more of the money that their music generated,” he shares.
