This week at the College of Music: Faculty + staff edition - Oct. 10, 2024

What does jazz performance have to do with business communication skills? Quite a lot! Our Entrepreneurship Center for Music recently collaborated with the Leeds School of Business’ Deming Center for Entrepreneurship for a thoughtful presentation by Assistant Teaching Professor Visda Carson about how to use listening skills as a business strategy. With a live performance by College of Music students Graeme Appel, Nathan Burak and Maya Napolillo, this event demonstrated how active listening skills apply in both performance and workplace communications. Our performers shared how they listen and adapt to each other while performing, while Carson shared insights about how these same listening skills translate into the business world.

• Congratulations to the Koa String Quartet—the College of Music’s graduate string quartet in residence—for their successful Bravo! Vail residency comprising wide-ranging community and education events. Coming up, the quartet will perform on CU Boulder SoundWorks’ Oct. 16 concert, premiering a new string quartet by student composer Josie Arnett.
• Lessons from the woods: In this essay, Professor of Composition Jeffrey Nytch, who also directs the college’s Entrepreneurship Center for Music, reflects on his experience as a MacDowell Fellow. 
• CU Boulder Chamber Winds “on tap” at the Rayback Collective, Oct. 13, 12-1:30 p.m.: Join us for chamber music paired with specific beverages to create an interactive, informal and fun experience! The program also includes the premiere of “Colors of Croatia” by undergrad Luka Vezmar (composition/oboe).
• On Oct. 15, 12:30-1:30 p.m. (S134), Bobby Stuckey—master sommelier and co-founder of the Frasca Restaurant Group—will join us for an open discussion on creativity in the arts and hospitality.
