This week at the College of Music: Faculty + Staff Edition - April 27, 2023

Colorado Sky
The College of Music’s Entrepreneurship Center for Music (ECM) awarded $10,486 in artist assistance grants this academic year, helping to support 14 students’ innovative projects, research, career building and professional development. Among them was Lírios Quartet cellist Chas Barnard, an artist diploma student, and alumna Sabina Balsamo who were artistically inspired by Proposition 114 which directed the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission to develop plans to reintroduce gray wolves west of the Continental Divide. The result is a new, family-friendly opera—“Colorado Sky”—that tells the story about the reintroduction of wolves through music and cinematic shadow puppetry. Learn more about the ECM’s recent grant recipients and upcoming performances of “Colorado Sky.” 

• Meet Margot + Christopher Brauchli: The College of Music’s 2023 Distinguished Service Award recipients.
• The annual Boulder Faculty Assembly Excellence Awards last week recognized outstanding work and a concerted effort to make advances in the academy, including the area of Excellence in Research, Scholarly and Creative Work—congratulations to our Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology Benjamin Teitelbaum for his honor in this category.
• While on sabbatical, Associate Professor of Guitar Nicolò Spera recorded Giacomo Susani’s Suite per la Cappella degli Scrovegni. 
• Recent alumnus Zane Cupec (PhD, Musicology)—who directs the CU Boulder Latin American Ensemble and who also serves as affiliate faculty at Metropolitan State University of Denver—has been selected by the MSU College of Letters, Arts and Sciences as a 2023 CLAS Deans Award winner. Congratulations!

• Meet O’Neil Jones, recipient of the Susan L. Porter Memorial Fellowship which provides scholarship support for student research that advances the mission of our American Music Research Center.
• Learning the art of silent film scoring: Some of our DMA students have delved into Grauman’s Theatres Scores Collection—part of our American Music Research Center archive—to present “A night of silent film” on May 4, featuring music from the collection.
