This week at the College of Music: Community Edition - March 9, 2023

College of Music Dean John Davis with Sarah Stoneback at the 2023 Colorado Music Educators Association’s Clinic/Conference

A multifaceted career

Alumna builds career on CU Boulder experience: At Montana State University—as Assistant Professor of Trumpet Pedagogy and Performance—alumna Sarah Stoneback is a respected educator, clinician, soloist and chamber musician who’s been featured on stages across the globe in various ensembles. She credits many of her accomplishments directly to the guidance, inspiration and encouragement she found at our college, where she earned a Master in Music degree and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in performance and pedagogy. “When I think about the College of Music, I think about a vibrant learning environment and a vibrant space to grow,” says Stoneback. Noteworthy

  • Orchestrating social consciousness: Kedrick Armstrong (MMus’23) is gaining national recognition as a conductor. An advocate for classical music performance and publication, plus the preservation of the voices of musicians of color, Armstrong is passionate about bringing recognition to Black female composers—with the Center for Black Music research in Chicago, Illinois, and the Helen Walker-Hill collection at CU Boulder among his crucial research tools.
  • On March 16, join us for the College of Music’s annual Distinguished Lectureship featuring André de Quadros—conductor, ethnomusicologist, music educator, writer and human rights activist. Based on decades working in some of the most desperate and marginalized settings, de Quadros will anchor his presentation in the great tradition of freedom dreaming. He calls for a new architecture of music performance and scholarly work, founded on radical compassion, dialogue and community engagement.
  • Expanding the student experience through world music: Our world music ensembles explore artistic identity, intercultural collaboration, global pedagogy and multidisciplinary approaches to music-making at the College of Music. Learn more + check out upcoming performances!
  • April 12-14: The 2023 Conference on World Affairs will explore the global climate crisis. Check out the schedule, including the CU Jazz Big Band on April 13, led by Paul Romaine and featuring jazz hits, old and new.
