Instrument Design Lab explores the science of music

Assistant Professor of Composition Annika Socolofsky blends the realms of art and science through the Instrument Design Lab (IDL). The course offers a science-based context to instrumentation, sound and musical creation, giving College of Music students a foundation in the science of music as they pursue their creative muse. • Transcribing the George Lynn Collection for classical guitar: Scholarship student Izzy Fincher, a recipient of our American Music Research Center’s George Lynn Memorial Award, transcribed several of Lynn’s chamber and solo instrumental works for classical guitar and flute duo. Check out the just-released recordings!
  • We’re thrilled to welcome guest composer Kevin Day next week! Says Director of Bands Don McKinney, “We’ll perform two of his pieces on Feb. 9—one piece with the Symphonic Band and the other piece with the Wind Symphony, including Day’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble.” Learn more and join us!
  • Sphinx Performance Academy taps early music (Early Music America): Did you know? For the first time in 2023, our College of Music and the SPA will partner to provide a full-scholarship, intensive summer chamber music and solo performance program focused on cultural diversity for string musicians ages 11-17. The SPA—which also partners with The Juilliard School and Cleveland Institute of Music—introduces students to period instruments and historical performance over a two-week period.
