In the field of medical technology, simple and intuitive tools that help to minimize invasive surgeries are scarce. Often times during surgeries, surgeons are inundated with having to tie sutures or lay down staples during the surgical process in order to prevent excessive bleeding.

The Myosine Ultrasonic Test Platform aims to be a test platform for biomedical engineers looking to develop surgical tools to mitigate these issues. Succinctly, the purpose of the project is to address the problem of surgeons having several tasks occupying their attention in addition to the surgery they are performing.  Integrating both tissue dissection and vessel sealing into a simple one-shot process will allow surgeons to be able to focus on the surgery itself. The product uses longitudinal ultrasonic vibration produced by an electromechanical piezo-driven transducer in order to not only dissect tissue, but to also perform the function of vessel sealing. The test platform will incorporate closed-loop velocity and frequency feedback systems so surgeons will not have to rely on selecting ‘energy modes’ to dissect different types of tissue. Instead, the controls embedded in the system will automate the process by adjusting frequency on the fly so that output power is regulated in real-time.

The primary end-users of this system are medical facilities exploring inventive, alternative solutions that utilize more affordable surgical devices.  In addition, the target customers are in the market for a device that will help streamline surgical procedures and minimize the invasive effects of operations such as hysterectomies, colectomies, splenectomies, et al. This product also provides a cheaper than conventional surgical instrument by offering lower cost production parts, so customers with financial restrictions will be able to obtain the end product. The Myosine Ultrasonic Test Platform dynamically changes frequency in real-time to deliver maximum power at all times despite changes in tissue impedance, making for a smooth and seamless experience for surgeons on the surgical floor.
