Semester Study Abroad Options in Australia
CU Boulder Education Abroad has great semester program options in Australia. Keep the following in mind:
Program Type
- Most programs are direct enroll or exchanges, meaning you take classes at a host university.
- Exchange programs (EAE) require a high level of independence and offer less support.
- Direct enroll programs through our partner providers (CIEE or WorldStrides) allow you to take courses at a local university with a high level of in-country support from the partner provider.
- Some programs are study abroad centerswhere you take classes alongside other study abroad (usually U.S.) students instead of a local university.
Dates
- The Australia academic calendar typically runs February-June and July-November. Some universities are exceptions to this and run on a US style calendar. Others offer US-style dates as an alternative to their traditional dates, but US-style date options have fewer courses to choose from.
- Seasons are opposite in Australia, so our winter is their spring. This also means that our first semester is their second semester, and vice versa.
Field Study & Summer Programs
Looking for something else? We also offer field study programs in the semester or summer, study center options in the summer, or summer internships.
Sydney Options
Sydney is most comparable to southern California in the US. Think of it as a cross between LA and San Diego, while remaining distinctly Australian.

The Rest of Australia
Thinking you want to head to Australia but not sure if Sydney is for you? There are some other amazing Australian cities to explore instead!
- Melbourne is the second biggest city in Australia. It's the "hipster" city known for it's food scene, art scene, and sport.
- The Gold Coast is Australia's domestic vacation destination, and feels like a mix between Miami and Orlando.
- Wollongong is the smallest city on the list. Located on the beach and in the mountains, it's 1.5 hours south of Sydney on the train.
