Program Management Office

The Program Management Office (PMO) at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Research & Innovation Office provides centralized project management expertise, strategic guidance and essential resources to support research programs and projects across campus.


The PMO is focused on the strategic goals of the campus research portfolio to:

  • Support defined strategic research programs
  • Facilitate and define specific opportunities or broader strategy on current or potential research programs
  • Standardize methodology for managing research projects
  • Institutionalize related processes
  • Report, track and communicate program status
  • Establish project management tools, resources, connections and training/development
  • Lead organizational change in promoting research project management culture
  • Provide project management expertise and skills in planning and implementation of projects

Focus Areas & Services

  Strategic Guidance

Research program management allows the campus to translate research strategy into actionable goals to measure performance and mitigate risks. 

Activities include: 

  • Defining programs
  • Informing program strategy through translation of implementation experiences and considerations in partnership with other university expertise
  • Implementing strategy on related projects
  • Tracking and monitoring program performance and impact
  • Identifying, assessing, and facilitating program related enterprise risks and associated impacts to the campus objectives, finances and operations
  • Collecting and growing expertise to provide program engagement guidance 

  Project Management Resources

The PMO offers project lifecycle expertise and resources ranging from consultation and tracking to advisement and direct management, building feedback mechanisms into related institutional knowledge, best practices, and tools that can be shared with the rest of campus.

  Research Project / Program Management Community

The Research Project / Program Management Community of Practice is intended to provide CU Boulder personnel performing roles and responsibilities in research program and project management with:

  • Peer-2-Peer Connection
  • Subject Matter Expertise
  • Tools & Resources
  • Training & Development

  Talent Development

The PMO partners with campus HR and individualized units to identify and support unique needs and recruitment considerations for research projects, including consulting on job descriptions, qualifications, competitive hiring packages and more. 

As these roles may be partially or fully supported by external grants and contracts, we focus on organizational engagement practices, offering a campus-wide network and community of practice, training opportunities, and additional role-related resources to nurture continued development of skilled talent.

The PMO outreach and education efforts aim to empower research program/project management individuals and communities through knowledge contributions and engagement to:

  • Increase awareness
  • Provide valuable educational opportunities
  • Foster meaningful research
  • Encourage project management community involvement

  Partnerships

The PMO partners with a variety of research units across campus including development, compliance, finance, initiative leads, individual unit research support, University Counsel, and risk management.
