Guidance on conducting searches for alternatives to the use of animals in research

Below is a link to an excellent presentation by Kathleen Gregory on conducting searches on alternatives for painful procedures, replacement with non-animal models, and to ensure no unnecessary duplication of research. This presentation could also help any researcher to conduct more effective searches for published research studies in general.

In this video Kathleen Gregory, Science & Engineering Librarian from the University of Denver presents:
Searching the Literature for Alternatives: A Librarian's Perspective on the 3R's

 Who should watch this video?

  • This session will be valuable for anyone who writes (or will write) IACUC protocols.
  • This session will also be valuable for IACUC members who review protocols.

Why should you watch this video?

  1. This dynamic presentation will include practical information on how to do a thorough literature search and document the search in the protocol. This is a valuable resource for you.
  2. The search for alternatives is required in accordance with the U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training, Animal Welfare Regulations, and guidance from the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW.
  3. The documentation for alternatives is required in all IACUC protocols and thus is an essential part of writing a protocol:
    • For painful procedures (USDA category D and E): the database, search strategy, and results are required for this type of alternative searches
    • To ensure no unnecessary duplication
    • Replacement with non-animal models

What will be presented in this video?

  • Documentation to include in the protocol for searches
  • Common databases used for alternative searches
  • Search strategies and tips
  • Red flags for evaluating the literature search
