This Week at the College of Music: Student Edition - Oct. 14, 2021

On Oct. 19, horn and piano faculty will collaborate with the CU Boulder Graduate Wind Quintet and members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in a Faculty Tuesdays program for winds, including celebrated BIPOC composer George Walker's "Wind Set." Says Professor of Horn Michael Thornton, "I'm excited about diversifying the program with a composer who has meaningful connections to CU Boulder." The late George Walker—who became the first African American composer to win a Pulitzer Prize—was a visiting professor here in the 1960s. Learn more about next week's recital. 

• The role of music in Cuban protests: Susan Thomas, a musicology professor and director of the College of Music’s American Music Research Center, shares the role musicians and artists played in recent demonstrations and in Cuban protests throughout history. 
• Celebrate World Singing Day on Oct. 16: Whether you're an experienced singer or a first-timer, learn more and be part of the chorus in this communal singing event at Boulder’s Central Park Bandshell, sponsored in part by the CU Boulder College of Music.
• Students, faculty, staff invited to participate in Campus Culture Survey: Opening Oct. 18, the Campus Culture Survey will allow campus members to provide anonymous feedback about experiences with hostile treatment, discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment or sexual misconduct and the extent to which they feel respected, supported and valued.
• University of Colorado Boulder reflects on progress, hurdles in diversity work: Progress is happening in programs like the Diverse Musicians’ Alliance where university staff and students work together to empower underrepresented artists. "Students have done a great job of challenging the College of Music to challenge themselves, of pushing people out of their comfort zones," said Alma Ramos, former diversity and outreach coordinator for the college.
