This Week at the College of Music: Student Edition - Nov. 17, 2022

We’re thrilled to welcome Juniper Winds as our current Graduate Woodwind Quintet in Residence! Members of the quintet serve as teaching assistants and mentors for our flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn studios. The ensemble—comprising flutist Lauren Flaten, oboist Sophie Maeda, clarinetist Yi Dong, bassoonist J.T. Holdbrooks and hornist Derrick Rassinier—also performs two recitals each year, as well as community outreach programming.

• On Nov. 18, our Diverse Musicians’ Alliance (DiMA) will host the Music Inclusion Coalition (founded by College of Music alumni)! Join us 9:30-10:30 a.m., S101.
• Grad student spotlight: meet Julia Sills! “I believe music that is relevant to modern popular culture should have a space in academic literature,” she says.
• Huge congratulations to Lírios Quartet cellist Chas Barnard (MM ’20)—originally from Dayton, Ohio—who was selected by audition with London Symphony Orchestra musicians during a Music Academy Summer Festival to train and perform with the LSO for 10 days this month! “Having grown up hearing the LSO in recordings and movies, it’s truly a dream come true to perform in these concerts as part of the Keston MAX residency,” shares Barnard. 
• Congratulations as well to Zane Cupec, a College of Music PhD candidate in ethnomusicology whose research paper—“Indexing Yorùbá Authenticity: The Legacy of Lázaro ‘El Maestro’ Galarraga”—was awarded the SEM African and African Diasporic Music Section student paper prize!
• Bravo to MarieFaith Lane (MM ’22, AD ’24) and several other College of Music students and alumni who—in celebration of the Dairy Arts Center’s 30th anniversary—have been selected for the center’s 30 Under 30 award! 
• Congratulations to our Eklund Opera Program for placing second in the very competitive National Opera Association’s Opera Production Competition with its production of “La Traviata” (2021)! Let’s hear it for Leigh Holman, stage director; Nicholas Carthy, conductor; Peter Dean Beck, scenic + lighting designer; and Ann Piano, costume designer!

• When students, faculty + staff notice behaviors of concern: When a violent incident occurs on another university campus, it’s natural to wonder if the same thing could happen here. One of the most important lines of defense is notifying the University of Colorado Police Department (CUPD) of any suspicious behavior, threats of harassment or other concerns.

• A new Basic Needs Center has been established within the Division of Student Affairs to address food insecurity, housing and more.
• Mobile Food Pantries: CU Boulder’s Volunteer Resource Center and Basic Needs Center partners with Community Food Share each semester to host several Mobile Food Pantries to support the needs of our community. All are welcome, including students, staff, faculty and community members.
