Emily Gee is a licensed physical therapist (PT) and certified yoga instructor with a background in music. As a cellist, she battled playing-related injuries during music conservatory including thoracic outlet syndrome and focal dystonia which forced her to abandon her musical studies in 2010. Throughout her own physical recovery, she saw a great need for healthcare providers who better understood the physical, mental and emotional demands placed on musicians throughout their careers. She became a PT with the intention of serving the music community as a clinician, educator, advocate and resource to promote health and wellness among musicians.
Gee earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) in 2018 from the University of California San Francisco/San Francisco State University DPT Program where she completed her doctoral research on PT interventions for performance anxiety in tertiary music students. She went on to complete the Regis University Residency in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and became a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist in 2023. She is also certified in concussion and vestibular rehabilitation through the American Institute of Balance. A longtime student of Vinyasa yoga, Gee completed a 200-hour Vinyasa yoga teacher training program in 2019. She has additional training in integrative somatic yoga as well as yoga for people living with traumatic brain injuries and has collaborated with the Love Your Brain Yoga Foundation.
As a health and wellness provider, Gee has worked in a variety of outpatient orthopedic and interdisciplinary clinics with musician and non-musician populations. She has significant experience treating patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions, repetitive stress injuries, post-operative conditions and post-concussion rehabilitation. Her approach to patient care is holistic, integrating mindful movement and breath practices and emphasizing patient education, injury prevention strategies and patient empowerment. Over the years, Gee has worked with music students and professional orchestral musicians, including members of the Colorado Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra and New York Philharmonic. She continues to provide consultation, treatment and yoga instruction to student and professional musicians around the country.
Gee has provided professional development courses for healthcare providers on musicians’ health needs and presented workshops and lectures for professional and student musicians on wellness and injury prevention. She has provided mentorship and clinical instruction to DPT students and to PT residents of the Regis Residency in Orthopedic PT. Gee has presented at state and national physical therapy conferences and at the Performing Arts Medicine Association International Symposium. She is an active member of the Colorado and national chapters of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), currently serving on the APTA Colorado Board of Directors and as part of the Colorado delegation to the APTA National House of Delegates.
Originally from Berkeley, California, Gee is an avid hiker and outdoor adventurer with her husband, Dmitri. She can also frequently be found practicing yoga, cooking and continuing to make music as a cellist and vocalist.
