J-1 Severe Economic Hardship Employment

A student in J-1 status may be authorized for off-campus employment in cases of “serious, urgent, and unforeseen economic circumstances which have arisen since acquiring exchange visitor status." Examples of unforeseen circumstances include (but are not limited to):

  • Loss of financial aid or on-campus employment (through no fault of your own);
  • Substantial fluctuations in currency value or exchange rate;
  • Unexpected change in the financial situation of your source of support;
  • Medical bills; and
  • Other substantial and unexpected expenses.

On-campus employment and Severe Economic Hardship employment are limited to a combined total of 20 hours per week while school is in session. For example, if you are authorized for both types of employment, you may not exceed 20 hours per week in total.

To determine your eligibility and apply, please contact ISSS. You must receive written authorization from ISSS before engaging in any off-campus employment.
