J-1 Employment and Training

Students in J-1 status may be authorized to engage in two kinds of employment:

  1. Academic Training- training program directly related to your field of study.
  2. Other Employment – such as on-campus work, positions tied to academic funding (teaching and research assistantships), or work based on economic necessity.

Important: All employment must be approved by ISSS before work begins, and each type of employment is subject to its own specific criteria.

As a student in J-1 status you are eligible for a variety of work opportunities in the United States, however working without receiving proper authorization first is a serious violation of your J-1 status.

Before beginning any type of employment, you must consult ISSS and receive written authorization in advance.

For additional details, please refer to the ISSS webpage corresponding to the form of work authorization applicable to your situation.
