If you are interested in declaring an English major, there are two tracks available: Literature and Creative Writing. The concentration in literary criticism emphasizes the history and analysis of literature from Chaucer and Shakespeare through Comic Books and Hip Hop poetics. The concentration in creative writing teaches the skills of fiction and poetry through small, workshop-based studio courses.

You can declare an English major or minor either online through Buff Portal Advising or in person with an English advisor. To declare online, go to Buff Portal Advising, sign in, and navigate to the “Schedule an Appointment” section. Select the “Add, Drop, Change, or Interested in Major/Minor” option, and follow the prompts to add a major or minor.

You may also check requirements by requesting the “What If” option in the Degree Audit system for the appropriate major or minor. This will allow you to see how English classes you have taken or are presently taking will apply to major or minor requirements.

If you’d prefer to declare with an advisor, stop by open campus drop-in hours on Mondays from 1-3 pm! (Open drop-in hours are held when classes are in session for fall and spring; summer drop-in hours may vary and can be checked through Buff Portal Advising).
