Data science is a multidisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data.
The minor introduces the core methods of data science — computing, statistics, and information science — as a complement to majors across CMDI, the social sciences, and the arts and humanities, and it is designed to build on quantitative-methods sequences you may already take in your major.
Requirements. The minor takes 19–22 credit hours. You take two computing courses (a starting course such as CSCI 1300, Computer Science 1, or LING 1200, Introduction to Python Programming, then INFO 2201, Programming for Information Science 2), a two-course quantitative-reasoning sequence (INFO 1301 and INFO 2301, or an approved sequence in your own field, such as psychology, sociology, political science, or geography), and six elective credits related to data science, including at least one information science course. Each course needs a C or better, your GPA in the minor department must reach 2.0, and at most six transfer credit hours count toward the minor. The CU Catalog entry lists the full course options.
How to declare. Fill out the CMDI Minor Declaration form. CMDI majors can instead declare with their CMDI advisor. Questions go to undergraduate advising.
