Any academic unit on the CU Boulder campus that is not part of the College of Arts and Sciences and that wants one or more of its courses to be considered for inclusion in the new Arts and Sciences General Education Curriculum or to count for Arts and Sciences credit should follow the instructions below. What is an Arts and Sciences course?

Arts and Sciences courses are intended to impart knowledge for its own sake. They belong to a long intellectual tradition, known as the Liberal Arts, associated with developing an educated citizenry. Grounded in disciplinary frameworks, whether arts, languages, humanities, social sciences or natural sciences, they include the study of historically defined and emerging topics, development of creative expression, and the creation of new knowledge through experimentation. Skills are means for acquiring knowledge rather than ends in themselves. Assessment in such courses emphasizes critical thinking and levels of mastery.

Any non-Arts and Sciences course that is approved for inclusion in one of the below General Education requirements will also count for Arts and Sciences credit. If a non-Arts and Sciences unit does not think one of its courses fits one of the General Education categories, they can still nominate it to count for Arts and Sciences credit by filling out the following form.

Skills, Distribution and the Diversity requirements

All non-Arts and Sciences courses that were NOT part of the old A&S Core Curriculum need to be nominated to be considered for inclusion in one or more the new the General Education requirements. ​To nominate a new or existing non-Arts and Sciences course to fill the Natural Science Laboratory requirement, fill out the appropriate parts of the “Distribution Requirement: Natural Science” form.

[1] Students pursuing a B.A. or B.F.A. degree in the College of Arts and Sciences must complete 90 credit hours in arts and science courses and more specifically must complete 30 upper-division credit hours in arts and sciences courses taught at CU Boulder.

[2] Non-A&S course that were part of the Core Curriculum were grandfathered into one or more of the General Education Requirements.
