In addition to Valentine's events, an interactive workshop to help you discover your leadership passion and a free film screening of Detroit, this week on campus features several engaging sessions at the Spring Diversity and Inclusion and Inclusive Sports summits, including: a dialogue on the campus "One Read," a discussion on the campus's inclusive excellence initiative, The Fake News Phenomenon, a panel with members of the Colorado Rockies and Rapids, a discussion on creating LGBTQ-inclusive teams and a session with CU Boulder student-athletes. 

Tuesday, Feb. 13

From Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces

Kick off the Spring Diversity and Inclusion Summit by joining in the discussion of the summit's One Read: "From Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces." Join presenter Brian Shimamoto 9:30–10:45 a.m. in the UMC Glenn Miller West Ballroom for a conversation about creating brave spaces in order to challenge ourselves to have difficult conversations around controversial issues. A follow-up discussion will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the same location.

A Path Towards Cultural Change: ODECE's Diversity Planning Process

Learn more about the campus Diversity, Inclusion and Academic Excellence Plan during this informal session led by Alphonse Keasley, associate vice chancellor for Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement, and Alaina Beaver, initiatives director of social climate strategy. You'll come away with a more complete understanding of ODECE’s diversity planning process and the current and ongoing work of the inclusive excellence initiative. 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the UMC Glenn Miller East Ballroom.

The Fake News Phenomenon

Join Elizabeth Skewes, chair of the Department of Journalism at the College of Media, Communication and Information, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the UMC Glenn Miller East Ballroom for a discussion of the values that drive traditional news, as well as the impact of today's social media on news quality—and whether "fake news" is really shaping public opinion. Assistant Professor Pat Ferrucci also will discuss how fake news influences the broader media agenda.

I Love Me Open House

Stop by the Women's Resource Center (UMC 457)  between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the annual I Love Me open house. There will be cookie decorating, Valentine's crafts and free food. Everyone is welcome!

Career in sports: Is it for me?

Join panelists from the Colorado Rockies, Colorado Rapids and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment for a discussion about working in the field of sports. Topics include but are not limited to: how to get your foot in the door, networking, the skill sets sport organizations are looking for and more. The panel, held from 10 to 10:50 a.m. in the Rec Center Ice Rink Overlook Meeting Room, is part of the two-day Inclusive Sports Summit on campus.

Sharing the Love on Valentine's Day!

Feeling creative? Stop by the Musuem of Natural History to make a valentine and enjoy a sweet treat between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the BioLounge.

Diving Deeper

Join diversity consultant Nevin Caple for a discussion about best practices and policies for creating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) inclusive teams. The discussion will be held from 1 to 1:50 p.m. in the Dal Ward Touchdown Club overlooking Folsom Field.
