This week at the College of Music: Student edition - Nov. 16, 2023

We’re pleased to announce that violinist Rinat Erlichman won first prize in the 2023-2024 Bruce Ekstrand Memorial Graduate Student Performance Competition! Under the mentorship of Associate Professor of Violin Harumi Rhodes, Erlichman prepared a program featuring works by Ernest Bloch, Paul Ben Haim and George Gershwin. Erlichman was awarded $2,000, plus the audience favorite prize. “Winning first prize and audience favorite for this year’s Ekstrand Competition is incredibly meaningful to me,” she shares. “Preparing for the competition has helped me expand my repertoire and develop my skills. I was honored to play the program in the final round with pianist Max Randal and all the wonderful finalists. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Ekstrand family. • Nov. 27, 2:30 p.m., Macky Auditorium (Room 102): “Mai Pa’a I Ka Leo: Voice in the Hawaiian Performance Soundscape” with the University of Michigan's Amy Ku’uleialoha Stillman and Aaron Sāla—Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend an inspiring and thought-provoking hō'ike (sharing of knowledge), a special opportunity to gain valuable insights into the musical culture of Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) in the context of our academic community and beyond. Prefer to tune in via Zoom? • Eric Haugen to be featured on Max Wolpert’s ‘Leviathans’ at Bemidji Symphony Orchestra concert (Bemidji Pioneer): Haugen and Wolpert, now both 30 years old, performed together as members of the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra when they were 11. [...] both ended up in graduate school at the University of Colorado.
• “Glory Colorado” meets Tupac as CU Boulder marching band feels the Prime Effect (Westword): The Golden Buffalo Marching Band jazzed up its song list this year to create the perfect “Coach Prime” playlist for fans flooding Boulder this season.
• Our Assistant Professor of Voice Andrew Garland will make his Boston Pops debut next month!
• Associate Dean for Graduate Studies Margaret Berg co-authored an article with alumna and Westminster High School band teacher Megan Lewin (’18) that includes core reflection applications for in-service music teachers. The article—“Stress-Reduction Strategies for Music Teachers”—was published in the September 2023 Music Educators Journal. Berg also has a chapter titled “Fostering care through core reflection” in the new Oxford Handbook of Care in Music Education, edited by K. Hendricks.
