College of Music to welcome renowned composer for centennial anniversary celebration: In a delayed celebration of the College of Music’s 100th anniversary, the CU Symphony Orchestra will perform a custom orchestral work by renowned composer Christopher Theofanidis. Originally commissioned by the college in 2020, the debut of Theofanidis’ work was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic; now that in-person performances have resumed, Theofanidis’ “On the Bridge of the Eternal” will debut in Macky Auditorium on April 26. “In some ways, the piece is about mystery,” he says. “It has this feeling you might get when looking at the Grand Canyon, or the night sky—that no matter what’s passing in front of you, there’s always a bigger picture.” Learn more + join us!

• Congratulations to our exceptional trumpet studio on its unprecedented success at the National Trumpet Competition last week winning three out of five collegiate divisions (large ensemble division, small ensemble division and military excerpts division) and placing second in the graduate solo division. Check out the Capriccio ensemble’s first place win with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol (arr. Gardner).
• New diversity fund immortalizes first African American graduate of CU College of Music: The Genevieve McVey Wisner Memorial Scholarship Fund, named in honor of the lifelong activist and pioneering music educator, will provide undergraduate and graduate scholarship awards for underrepresented music students. Wisner, whose parents were among the first Black families to settle in Boulder in 1897, became the first Black graduate of the College of Music in 1940 with a bachelor’s degree in music education, followed by a master’s degree in 1944.
• The social neuroscience of music—understanding the social brain through human song: Inspired by the creative efforts of people around the world to reproduce music making while social distancing, a recent study reveals what goes on in the brain when a person embarks on a musical collaboration project.
