Hale Herald - Summer Solstice 2024

Chair's Letter
Once again in Boulder, we moved directly to winter from summer. It is mid-June, and the days are hot and long, and the flowers are in bloom. Summer is lovely here, although this is the time of year when our community disperses around the world for research. To all of our faculty and students in the field this summer, may this be an insightful, enlightening period of research. For our faculty and students who are writing this summer, may the writing muses inspire and energize you. And for our entire community, including our incredible staff, may there be plenty times of relaxation and plan in the mix too.
The Hale “tower” on the north side of the building is under renovation. The north stairs are being reconstructed, the area under the tower is being excavated, and a new foundation laid. Currently, the south and west entrances to the building are open, but the north entrance is closed for the duration of the construction, which should take about one year. The 4th floor seminar room will be closed for the coming year.
Our academic year culminated with the Anthropology Commencement Ceremony on May 9. We had one of the largest classes ever of MA and PhD graduates, as well as many accomplished BA majors and minors in the undergraduate graduating class. Congratulations to all!
Looking ahead to fall, our annual Department of Anthropology fall picnic will be on Friday, August 30. Please put this on your calendar; we will share more information about it at the beginning of the semester.
Please read on to learn about the innovative work CU anthropologists are doing on campus and around the world.
Here’s to a wonderful summer,
Carole McGranahan, Chair
