Doctoral students will be expected to demonstrate an ability to independently carry out original field or laboratory research, to acquire original data, make appropriate analyses, and prepare reports of publishable caliber. Students must demonstrate proficiency in a broad subject of learning and the ability to critically evaluate work in anthropology.

An MA in anthropology is not required for admission to the PhD program. Applicants to the PhD program should have a solid background in anthropology or a closely related discipline and should demonstrate familiarity with the theories and methods of anthropology. Applicants who have a master's degree in anthropology or a closely related discipline may be eligible for transferring up to 21 credits.
