Annabelle Lewis

Annabelle J. Lewis is a Ph.D. candidate in Archaeology at CU Boulder. She earned undergraduate degrees in Anthropology and Art History from Wake Forest University, and an MA in Anthropology with a focus on Historical Archaeology from the College of William & Mary.  

Annabelle’s research is situated in Upstate New York, where she studies 19th century mortuary landscapes to understand social values around gender, class, and ethnicity in the past. Her community-based research combines geospatial surveys of cemetery sites with data from archival sources, such as census documents and newspapers, looking for the connections between spaces for the living and the dead.  

Annabelle is also passionate about cemetery preservation and gravestone care. In addition to her dissertation research, she works with CU Boulder faculty and community partners to study, map, and care for Colorado’s historic cemeteries.
