Trauma & Violence flyer featuring eyeballs

How do violent events and experiences of prolonged suffering and abuse constitute the making and remaking of a "self"? What sort of social practices does trauma incite onto the subject and into the world? In this course, we will excavate how trauma, suffering, and violence are ethnographically and theoretically conceptualized. Key themes will include gendered & racial violence, disabilities & chronic illness, and embodiment of trauma on restricted lives in the United States such as undocumented migrants, asylum seekers, and prisoners.
