Panoramic Flutist 2024—what’s in store?
Professor of Flute Christina Jennings introduces highlights of the upcoming Panoramic Flutist residency.
From May 28-31, 2024, we will explore the flute through in-depth exploration of our bodies, minds and beyond. Our projects for this time together will be:
-
Charles Griffes’ “Poem”
-
Pre-assigned chamber music for flutes (duos, trios, quartets, and quintets from diverse eras and composers)
Additional activities will include pre-assigned readings and podcasts, writing prompts and journaling, yoga and mindfulness exercises, and Imposter Syndrome and confidence-building exercises.
Performances will include a faculty recital, chamber music performances and a group dance presentation of our Griffes project.
This residency is a non-traditional master class. Students will not perform individually for teachers; rather, we will explore the pre-assigned repertoire and concepts collectively, holistically and in our safe community.
This class is open to flutists ages 18-100. We are inviting musicians of multi-generations and experiences. Flutists should feel comfortable with Griffes’ “Poem” and the Flute/Theory Workout (Moyse scales), and be open to exploring music in movement and issues of mindset and self-confidence. Dream outcomes for our time together include shared experience and a fluent understanding of our repertoire, the ways in which our minds and bodies interact with the flute, and a created community.
Chamber music and pre-assigned reading will be provided one month prior.

Instructor biographies
Flutist Christina Jennings is praised for virtuoso technique, rich tone and command of a wide range of literature. The Houston Press declared, “Jennings has got what it takes: a distinctive voice, charisma and a pyrotechnic style that works magic on the ears.” She enjoys a musical career made up of diverse performing and recording, collaborations with living composers and work guiding young musicians. Highlights from this season include filmed courses for Tonebase, a week at the St. Bart’s Music Festival as principal flutist and a return to Miller Theater where she will perform an evening of Bach concertos with pianist Simone Dinnerstein.
Jennings’ recent Naxos disc of flute music by American composer George Rochberg features her transcriptions of the Caprice Variations published by Galaxy Music. With Italian guitarist Nicolò Spera, she released an Albany disc of new music by Christopher Theofanidis; the Record Guild of America praised the project, writing “Flutist Christina Jennings’ pristine ornamental riffs in ‘Pavane I’ and overall musicality mesh seamlessly with Spera’s.”
Active as a concerto soloist, Jennings has appeared with over 50 orchestras and premiered new concertos composed for her by Carter Pann, Marcus Maroney and Laura Elise Schwendinger. The Washington Post described her performance of Jonathan Leshnoff’s concerto with the Fairfax Symphony as a “spirited, quicksilver performance.”
As broad-gauged in her musical pursuits as she is in her repertoire choices, Jennings played 10 years as the principal flute with the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (Houston) where the Houston Culture Map described her as a “... flutist (who) glistened with golden pixie dust.” Chamber music partners have included Sō Percussion, the Takács Quartet, the Brasil Guitar Duo and frequent performances with Dinnerstein.
In great demand as a teacher, Jennings is professor of flute at the University of Colorado Boulder, founder of the Panoramic Flutist Seminar and director of winds at Greenwood Music Camp. She is a frequent guest faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp and this summer she will teach at Round Top Festival.
Jennings lives in Boulder with her husband, violist Matthew Dane, and their twin teenagers.
Lisa Garner Santa is an Artist-Performer and Professor of Flute at Texas Tech University, where she enjoys a diverse career as a teacher, recitalist, soloist and chamber musician, as well as Director of the Institute for Inclusive Excellence. Garner Santa's playing has been described as "the kind of tone I prefer - rich, colorful, perfectly in control and always in tune. Her phrasing is all well-shaped and thoughtful...a truly remarkable artist with dazzling musical ability." (American Record Guide)
Garner Santa's versatile programming ranges from Bach's elegant Baroque music to the contemporary and colorful works of Amanda Harberg. Her passion for contemporary flute repertoire was sparked by the early flute works of Lowell Liebermann, the topic of her dissertation. Since then, she has supported the effort to expand and promote new music by performing and commissioning works from young as well as established composers, including Ahmed Al Abaca, Derek Bermel, Valerie Coleman, Peter Fischer, Amanda Harberg, Warner Hutchison, John Mackey, Mike Mower, Joel Puckett, Matthew Santa, Chrysanthe Tan and Roger Zare.
As a pedagogue, Garner Santa presents masterclasses throughout the United States and abroad. International exchanges include masterclasses at the Royal College of Music in London, England and Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, as well as Peking University in Beijing, China. She has presented and performed in symposiums in Naolinco (Mexico), San Jose (Costa Rica) and Mendoza (Argentina). Her research, pedagogical articles and interviews are published in The Flutist Quarterly and Flute Talk. She is a recipient of the Texas Tech Big 12 Fellowship, the Texas Tech Alumni Association New Faculty Award, the President's Excellence in Teaching award, the President's Excellence in Diversity and Equity Award and she was recognized in 2020 as a TTU Integrated Scholar. She also serves as immediate Past Chair of Texas Tech University's prestigious Teaching Academy.
Currently serving on the National Flute Association Board of Directors, Garner Santa has been a featured performer at numerous conventions. She has served as an adjudicator and/or coordinator for many NFA events and competitions, including the High School Soloist Competition, the NFA Newly Published Music Competition, the NFA Professional Flute Choir Competition, the General Competitions Coordinator and as NFA Convention Associate Program Chair for the 2002 convention. She served the NFA as Program Chair for the 2011 convention held in Charlotte, NC, followed by membership on the NFA Executive Committee, Performance Health Care Committee and Archives and Oral History Committee.
With co-authors Matthew Santa and Thomas Hughes, Garner Santa developed the Flute/Theory Workout, a method that efficiently introduces full-range scalar and chordal flute technique while introducing music theory fundamentals at the same time. The Workout, which comes with entertaining audio accompaniment, is available through Carolyn Nussbaum Music Co. and Flute World. You can also find all-level tutorials online through MusicProfessor.com or Udemy. Garner Santa holds performance degrees from West Texas State University, Florida State University and The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Her teachers to whom she is eternally grateful include Carol Wincenc, Charles DeLaney, Sally Turk, Helen Blackburn and Jamie Shipp.
Additionally, Garner Santa is a certified Professional Yoga Instructor through the Kripalu Center (E-RYT 500) and teaches Yoga and the Creative Arts: Philosophy and Practice, a core curriculum course at TTU.
Santa is a Wm. S. Haynes Ambassador/Clinician.
