Continuing Education and Professional Studies

Students who are enrolled in courses offered through the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies (CE) may be eligible for financial aid. In order to determine your eligibility, you must know whether you have a degree or nondegree status.

Degree Students

If you are formally admitted into a University of Colorado at Boulder degree program, and you have completed at least one semester of classes on the Boulder campus, you are a degree student. If you are eligible for financial aid on the Boulder campus, you will retain your eligibility for financial aid while enrolled through CE; however, your financial aid budget will be adjusted to reflect CE tuition and fees, which may impact the amount of aid you can receive.

Note that courses through CE must be for credit and termed based courses through Boulder Evening, applied music, individualized instruction, or CAETE (Center for Advanced Engineering and Technology Education). At this time, self-paced online and correspondence courses are not funded by financial aid.

If all your classes are through CE, then your financial aid will be credited to your CE bill. If your financial aid is in excess of your bill, you will receive a refund from CE. Refund checks may be requested in person at Continuing Education accouting office or by calling accounting at 303-492-2212.

If you enroll in a regular course on the Boulder campus in addition to CE courses, all of your financial aid will be credited toward your Boulder campus bill, not your CE bill. If your financial aid funds exceed your Boulder campus bill, you will be issued a refund check from the Bursar's Office in Regent Hall; you should take your refund check (or your own funds) to CE to pay your bill there. Please note that you will have two separate tuition bills - one with the Boulder campus and one with CE.

Tuition Deferments

CE requires that you pay your bill at the time you register for classes. However, if you have been awarded financial aid sufficient to cover your CE bill (and Boulder campus bill, if applicable); you may qualify for a tuition deferment. A tuition deferment allows you to defer your CE bill until your financial aid becomes available. If you are enrolled through both the Boulder main campus and CE, contact the Office of Financial Aid at (303) 492-5091 and speak with a financial aid counselor. It you are enrolled only through CE, contact the Continuing Education Financial Aid Counselor at (303) 492-8146.

Nondegree Students

Under certain circumstances, students enrolling as non degree may be eligible for federal loan funding. Paperwork must be completed by University Departments verifying the student’s status along with the completion of the FAFSA. Students interested in receiving aid as a non degree student must contact the financial aid advisor at Continuing Education by calling 303-492-8252.

Institutional Requirements to Be Considered for Nondegree Financial Aid

As a nondegree student, you must maintain certain satisfactory academic progress requirements (SAP). Failure to meet these requirements will result in the loss of financial aid funding. An appeal process is available. See our SAP page for more information.

  1. Each semester you must have a minimum GPA of 2.0
  2. You must complete all courses you attempt. You may not receive an IW, IF, or W (incomplete withdrawl, incomplete fail, withdrawl) for any course work during a term in which you are receiving non degree aid funding.

Limited Funds Available

Federal Direct Stafford Loan: Eligible nondegree students (as defined above) taking courses necessary for admission into an undergraduate degree program may qualify for a Subsidized or Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan. See www.colorado.edu/finaid/typesofaid.html for details on these loan programs.

For further information, contact Continuing Education for an appointment with the financial aid advisor (303) 492-8252. Or you can contact CE via email cefinaid@colorado.edu
