Next week, about 8,000 new students will arrive on campus, marking the start of Fall Welcome. There will be many activities and events between Aug. 18 and Aug. 31 in addition to move-in, giving students a chance to get acquainted with each other, become familiar with campus resources and feel welcomed and supported in their transition to college life.
Among the many Fall Welcome activities planned for students and the campus community, signature events include:
Aug. 21
Convocation: Students are formally introduced to the academic community at this event.
Black & Gold Bash: This event will feature giveaways, carnival snacks, a live DJ, bungee trampolines, a zip line, a ropes course and more.
Aug. 22
CU Kickoff: New students gather at Folsom Field for the official CU Kickoff pep rally, complete with the traditional appearance by Ralphie!
Aug. 29
Be Involved Fair: This event gives students an opportunity to discover the organizations that make up the CU Boulder community and find their niche.
Parking, traffic impacts
Campus parking permit holders can expect traffic congestion and limited access to parking lots during move-in the week of Aug. 19. The heaviest days for traffic will be Aug. 19, 20 and 21. Main campus pay station and metered lots will be closed during the three-day move-in dates.
Permit holders have received email notification of their permitted lot/zone parking impacts from Parking Services. Additionally, Regent Drive will be restricted to vehicles displaying move-in permits from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. between Sunday, Aug. 19, and Tuesday, Aug. 21.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to plan alternate transportation options to get to campus or take advantage of alternate work arrangements.
Dates to know
Different from last year, the first days of move-in will take place over a weekend. Move-in begins Saturday, Aug. 18, for international students and continues through Tuesday, Aug. 21. Students’ move-in dates are determined by their residence hall. Other Fall Welcome events begin Sunday, Aug. 19, ending with the Rocky Mountain Showdown on Friday, Aug. 31.
Volunteers needed
Volunteers are an essential component during Fall Welcome, and the university is in need of enthusiastic volunteers to help move students into their residence halls, provide traffic support and help welcome new students and families to campus. Move-in will begin on Saturday, Aug. 18 for international students and go through Tuesday, Aug. 21. The busiest day for move-in will be Aug. 19, with about 3,000 new students moving to campus that day alone.
There are a variety of volunteer shifts for both groups and individuals. If you would like to volunteer as a department or group, contact Hannah Wilks at hannah.wilks@colorado.edu. Fall Welcome volunteers can also request a volunteer parking access pass to use on campus. Volunteers who receive a permit will have to be parked by 8 a.m. during move-in days.
