If your department wishes to offer a certificate that will be post to a student's official record and transcript (i.e., an official certificate), the department must ensure that the certificate requirements meet established criteria. Departments may submit certificate proposals for review and approval to:
- Undergraduate certificates: Consult Academic Affairs' Guidelines for Academic Certificates for Undergraduates document.
- Graduate certificates: Consult the Graduate School's Policies and Procedures for Establishing Graduate Interdisciplinary or Professional Certificate Programs page.
Approved certificate programs are built in Campus Solutions. If your department no longer wishes to offer an approved certificate, email Academic Requests to have it inactivated.
Policies and SLAs
Academic certificates completed since Fall 2013 appear in the top block of the transcript (like a degree) and have a program/plan stack in Campus Solutions. Certificates completed prior to Fall 2013 appear within the term as transcript text and do not have a program/plan stack.
Departments may submit the form to award a student's certificate at any time; however, Office of the Registrar staff won't process awarded certificates until that semester's degrees have posted to transcripts, and won't post a student's certificate until after their degree has posted.
Beginning with the Summer 2017 semester, departments must submit certificate award notifications by the Friday after degrees are posted (see the Certificate Calendar in the sidebar).
Only officially approved academic certificates are posted to transcripts. Any requests to post unofficial, unapproved certificates will be reported to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education or the Graduate School Dean. If you're unsure whether a certificate program has been approved, email the Office of the Registrar's certificate coordinator for verification.
