This week at the College of Music: Community edition - Jan. 11, 2024

Happy New Year!

The Entrepreneurship Center for Music (ECM) introduced a new face this academic year: While Professor of Composition and ECM Director Jeffrey Nytch is on sabbatical until fall 2024, Marilyn Brock fulfills the role of interim director. Brock says her goals for the ECM are to continue the momentum already in place and to use her connections to bring lessons about the broader music industry to our students. “I love to provide opportunities for students to learn in the classroom, or in workshops, things that I had to learn the hard way. Another goal for me is to develop as much collaboration as possible—within the College of Music, with other parts of campus, or even with guests that we have coming in this year. I also want to ensure that diverse voices are represented and that I’m creating a space where regardless of identity or background, students feel safe and feel a sense of belonging within the ECM.” Learn more, including a preview of ECM offerings this spring.

• Research & Innovation Office announces 2024 Faculty Fellows class: Congratulations to our Assistant Professor of Music Technology Grace Leslie!
• Takács Quartet with guest pianists: Joyce Yang in Macky Friday, David Korevaar in Grusin Sunday and Monday (Sharps & Flatirons)
• Jan. 15: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: CU in the Community (Denver City Park).
• Jan. 22: Tabatha L. Jones Jolivet—an abolitionist organizer, educator, minister and community-engaged, interdisciplinary scholar, whose work centers on the practice of examining “love, study and struggle” rooted in Black radical tradition and prophetic spirituality—will deliver the keynote address during the campus’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Convocation 2024. 
• Feb. 1: In 2023, Colorado Governor Jared Polis proclaimed the first day of Black History Month each year as the Center for African and African American Studies Day. Celebrate the first anniversary of CAAAS Day with music, dance, poetry and other African cultural expressions.
