This Week at the College of Music: Community Edition - April 7, 2022

Chamber Music Showcase performances represent all departments, diverse repertoire: As the 2021-22 academic year races toward the finish line, there are still many terrific performances to enjoy! For starters, don’t miss the final two Chamber Music Showcase performances tonight and on April 16—in person or online—featuring student groups from every department, and including new group arrangements and diverse repertoire. Says Chamber Music Coordinator Meta Weiss, “With their faculty coaches, students in the college’s Chamber Music Program have been rehearsing, studying and crafting their interpretations of varied chamber music works all semester, and they’re excited to present them in the showcase concerts.” Learn more + join us! 

• On April 8 via Zoom (11:15 a.m.): Using Thelonious Monk’s music and his compositional and performance styles as metaphor alongside critical race theory, Joyce McCall of Arizona State University’s School of Music will illustrate how his music and other cultural artifacts can help college music programs confront racism and chart paths toward substantive change. 
• Two performances of “Follow the birds” on April 8 (7 p.m. + 8:30 p.m.): Discover the latest creation by Associate Professor of Composition Michael Theodore, featuring legendary folk-punk musician Tim Eriksen ... and reserve your seat!
• Congratulations to Susan Thomas—the College of Music’s Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity + Inclusion, Director of the American Music Research Center and Professor of Musicology–for being recognized by the Boulder Faculty Assembly as a 2022 Excellence in Leadership + Service award recipient. On April 11, the 2022 Excellence Awards Ceremony will feature a keynote address by Barbara Demmig-Adams, a Hazel Barnes award winner. 
• How do musicians create music in response to pandemics? How do musicians impact public health and healing from pandemics? History reveals what we could do now. On April 30, join Chair of Musicology and Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology Austin Okigbo in exploring these topics at TEDxMileHigh!
• CU Boulder dedicates tree to victims killed in King Soopers mass shooting, planted within sight of where the Golden Buffalo Marching Band practices. Shooting victim Teri Leiker was a fan of the marching band and a scholarship fund has been established in her memory.
