The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and safe environment for all students, staff, faculty, and visitors to our campus.

United States law protects individuals at federally funded educational institutions from discrimination on the basis of protected class identity. In accordance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, certain categories are designated as protected classes, therefore barring institutional and individual discrimination based on:

  • Race
  • Age
  • Color
  • Religion/creed
  • Sex
  • Gender
  • Gender identity/expression
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Pregnancy
  • National origin or ancestry
  • Disability
  • Veteran status
  • Political affiliation/philosophy

At the University of Colorado Boulder, the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) is the entity responsible for implementing and enforcing University policy regarding protected class discrimination.

If you or someone you know has experienced an instance of intimidating, hostile, or offensive behavior based on one or more of these federally protected classes, there are a variety of resources available to you. We first encourage you to reach out to the OIEC directly to file a report and seek resources. However, if you are more comfortable reaching out to ISSS first, then we encourage you to contact ISSS with your concerns regarding protected class discrimination as well as any questions about resources for those affected.

Please keep in mind that the majority of ISSS staff members are mandatory reporters per the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC). Therefore, if an ISSS advisor is informed of an instance of discrimination against a protected class, we are required to file an OIEC report, and an OIEC representative will reach out to the affected individual directly to assist. Making a report does not result in any automatic action or investigation. Individuals negatively impacted have a choice in what they want to have happen and OIEC does not notify an alleged offender of a report.

ISSS is here to support the CU Boulder international community, creating a positive and welcoming environment for all.
