Updated Sick Leave Policy

CU Boulder’s sick leave policy has been updated to reflect the recent changes from  Senate Bill 23-017. In August of 2023, the Colorado state senate voted to expand upon the  state’s current sick leave policy. In compliance with the state, CU Boulder has also updated their administrative leave policy to reflect those changes.  You can see the sick leave changes outlined here in APS 5062.   The State Personnel Board is also amending the rule to include these changes for classified staff,  https://dhr.colorado.gov/news/dhr-emergency-rulemaking-effective-8/7/2023

The updates to our current leave policy are the following:

  • Family Support : accrued sick leave can be used to care for a family member whose school or place of care has been closed due to inclement weather, loss of power, loss of heating, loss of water, or any other unexpected occurrence or event that results in the closure of the family member's school or place of care.
  • Bereavement Support: use sick leave to grieve, attend funeral services or a memorial, or deal with financial and legal matters that arise after the death of a family member.  This type of leave is available after an employee has utilized their bereavement leave.
  • Evacuation : if an employee needs to evacuate their place of residence due to inclement weather, loss of power, loss of heating, loss of water, or any other unexpected occurrence that results in the need to evacuate the employee’s residence, they may use accrued sick leave.

Please note:

We hope these updates will continue to provide support and be of service to our CU Boulder campus community. For further information and details, please refer to the  HR Leave page. If you have specific questions or concerns, please contact  hrer@colorado.edu.
