  • FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AND SUCCESS

Sam supports faculty communitybuilding by organizing and facilitating Faculty SPACE events. Created by alumni of the Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI), the Shared Perspectives and Community Engagement (SPACE) project fosters a more inclusive and connected faculty community across campus. Faculty SPACE offers informal, agendafree gatherings for faculty, and Sam coordinates monthly events throughout the academic year, including happy hours, breakfasts, and lunches held across CU Boulder.

Sam is an associate professor of religious studies and researches the Bible through various critical methods and in light of wider historical contexts to understand both the production of these documents as well as their history of interpretation. His particular areas of research include the development of the Pentateuch, legal hermeneutics in the ancient Near East, language ideology in the ancient world, and ritual theory applied to biblical texts. He also has interests in archaeology, Semitic philology and linguistics, and Late Antiquity. Sam received his Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Chicago, his M.Div. from the Westminster Theological Seminary, and his B.A. from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

Fun Fact: Sam spent decades playing guitar and, while no longer playing like he used to, still loves listening to all genres of music.
