Overview
The Academic Leaders Institute (ALI) is a comprehensive suite of program offerings that support incoming and current CU Boulder faculty academic leaders in their leadership development. ALI programming supports academic leaders across the full spectrum of leadership appointments from director through executive leaders. The curriculum is grounded in the ALI Competency Model.

ALI Programming
Brief workshops and seminars on topics of interest for leaders are presented throughout the spring and fall semesters and listed on this page.
The following annual programs are by invitation from the Office of Faculty Affairs directly to individuals.
July 13, 2027
ALI New & Returning Chairs Orientation:
- What: Community building and professional development specific to chairs' leadership responsibilities
- Who: First-time chairs appointed for a term beginning in AY2027-28, and faculty returning to the chair role in AY2027-28 after a gap of five or more years
- Participation encouraged/required: Encouraged
- How: By direct invitation in spring 2027. The OFA reviews appointments and directly invites individuals. We also welcome units to recommend invitees, including select faculty directors with responsibilities parallel to those of chairs, by emailing OFAFDS@Colorado.EDU.
- Of note: Individuals who are also invited to attend the New & Returning Leaders Orientation are encouraged to attend these distinct and complementary events.
August 10, 2027
ALI New & Returning Leaders Orientation:
- What: Community building and professional development specific to the responsibilities of academic leaders
- Who: Individuals with academic leader appointments for AY2027-28 that include responsibilities related to faculty, and who have not attended this orientation in the past three years
- Participation encouraged/required: Required
- How: By direct invitation in spring 2027. The OFA reviews appointments and past orientation attendance and directly invites individuals. We also welcome units to recommend invitees by emailing OFAFDS@Colorado.EDU.
- Of note: Individuals who are also invited to attend the New & Returning Chairs Orientation should plan to attend these distinct and complementary events.

ALI Fall Summit:
- What: Community building and professional development focused on a timely topic
- Who: Academic leaders with appointments in AY2027-28 and responsibilities related to faculty
- Participation encouraged/required: Encouraged
- How: By direct invitation in spring 2027. The OFA reviews appointments and directly invites individuals. We also welcome units to recommend invitees by emailing OFAFDS@Colorado.EDU.
Ongoing throughout AY 2026-27
ALI Workshops:
Onboarding and ongoing professional development for academic leaders are offered throughout the academic year. The knowledge, skills, and abilities learned through these workshops correspond to those identified as critical actions and behaviors that CU academic leaders must demonstrate to be effective on the job, as described in the Academic Leaders Competency Model. Leave with a concrete action or tool you can use! Learn about the resources on our campus to help you problem-solve and be an effective leader.
