Invitations have been sent to new CEAS staff members and those who were previously eligible but unable to attend a past orientation. This is a full-day orientation for new staff members in the College of Engineering and Applied Science who started after December 2022. If you, or someone you know, is eligible to attend but did not receive an invitation, please reach out to Angela Eberhardt for more information.

Bring a sweet or savory pie to share for this informal social event! All types of pie are welcome – fruit, pizza, pot … you name it. Coffee will be provided.

Join the CU Be The Match On Campus chapter for a 3-day event to add new potential blood stem cell donors to the registry. Every 3-4 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer or blood disorder and 70% of them need an unrelated donor to treat their disease. The cure is literally in you and 90% of the time donation is similar to giving platelets or plasma.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) invites faculty to a Meet Your Major event. This will be a great opportunity for SWE members to meet and get to know women identifying faculty in their respective research fields and programs. If you are interested and available to participate, please sign up for Meet Your Major and prepare to meet with students over coffee and snacks.

ESC would like to thank everyone who completed the Staff Retention Survey last fall. The anonymous survey was distributed to all College of Engineering & Applied Science staff members, and we were pleased to receive a 75% response rate. This survey was intended to better understand why college staff leave (and stay) and was in response to the “great resignation” following the COVID-19 pandemic and college staff attrition trends.

The results of this survey, as well as a list of recommendations, were presented to ESC and Dean Keith Molenaar on Dec. 8. A summary report is now available on the ESC webpage. If you have questions or concerns, please email ESC@colorado.edu.

The CEAS HR team is looking at new ways to create a peer-to-peer forms of staff recognition/award. We are seeking input from our CEAS community on what folks would like to see in terms of a new form of recognition that would enable peers to nominate peers.

Andy shows great initiative and handles difficult situations with maturity and calmness, demonstrating an excellent ability to communicate. We are fortunate to have Andy!

• Bret Moreland, Laboratory and Facilities Coordinator, ECEE

The flood that occurred during the winter break was major involving the entire ECEE wing of the Engineering Center, especially our teaching and research labs. Bret was on-site during much of the break assessing the damage, working with the applicable faculty, coordinating efforts with the building proctor, facilities management, and ServPro. As one faculty member put it “He did this over the holidays with unfailing dedication, being responsible to faculty and staff remediation needs above and beyond what might be expected. He checked continuously with faculty to be sure that they weren't being overlooked. He made sure that we were able to start out the semester with our teaching and research labs back in excellent working order.” Bret will continue his communication and remediation coordination efforts for some time to come and is actively collaborating with the faculty on disaster prevention.

Andraa Von Boeselager and Rebecca Rico have been working hard to improve our student recruitment in CEAE. They have launched a department tour for prospective students and visitors as well as greeted a handout to provide an overview of CEAE. It has been so great to watch their passion project come to life. Their hard work and dedication to student recruitment is so appreciated! -Madison Lane

A huge shoutout and thank you to Dirk Grunwald, Beth Stade, Kristina Richards & Devon Johnson for finding time in their busy schedules to participate in the Clifton Strengths evaluation and coaching session this week. They were all so engaged during the session, so willing to share, and I believe it helped to strengthen our community and working relationships.

The Employee Management and Compliance Essentials course provides a comprehensive overview for managers and supervisors of legal guidelines, campus policies, and CU-Boulder practices related to employee management and development.
