- MEDIA STUDIES

Somi Soroush is a PhD student in the Media Studies department with a background in art, animation, and storytelling. She holds an MFA from the University of Idaho, where she studied how visual stories shape the way people see and understand the world.
Her research focuses on the representation of women in media and how media shapes our ideas about identity and belonging. More recently, she has been interested in diaspora and how displacement changes personal and collective memory. Her work asks how images, memories, and media help people understand who they are, especially when they live far from home.
She studies storytelling as a way people make meaning, looking at the connections between media, visual culture, and personal narratives. Alongside her research, she sometimes creates short animations that explore these ideas in a visual and creative way.
