Students who wish to graduate from CU Boulder and participate in the university commencement ceremony must apply to graduate.

Remember that graduation and commencement are not the same thing! “Commencement” refers to the ceremony that celebrates graduation. In the spring, the university holds a main commencement ceremony to which all prospective graduates are invited. Many departments also hold smaller, more intimate ceremonies for students in their majors.

“Graduation” refers to the award of a degree upon confirmation that all degree/major/minor requirements are complete. “Graduation” is always associated with the completion of a spring, summer or fall term. Degree requirements are not reviewed or confirmed until grades are official for the term.

Submitting an online application for graduation by the published deadline will add your name to the university commencement program and notify the College of Arts and Sciences that you wish to be considered for graduation review once grades are official.
