Will Taylor and Lakota Elders Receive AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize
Professor Will Taylor and Lakota elders receive the AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize for their research article, "Early Dispersal of Domestic Horses into the Great Plains and Northern Rockies." The prize is awarded to the author or authors of an outstanding paper published in the Research Articles or Reports sections of Science.
From the award nominator, "The beauty of this paper is not only its extraordinary breadth of scientific method and authorship and use of modern, historical, archaeological, and museum collections, but its inclusion of Native authors and indigenous perspectives from cultures in which relationship with horses has been for hundreds, if not -via more ancient traditions- thousands of year."
The Lakota Nation elders made the nearly 6-hour drive to Boulder, Colorado. They exchanged gifts with researchers and explored the potential to expand their award-winning scientific collaboration with researchers from CU Boulder and around the world.
