Purchasing a CU license plate in Colorado is easier than ever and you will be helping a future CU student when you get your plates!
Simple step-by-step process to obtain your CU license plate: Step 1: Make a scholarship donation to the CU Boulder Alumni Association of at least $50 through the CU Foundation website. Step 2: After you make your scholarship donation, you will receive a confirmation email. Take the donation confirmation email, which will include the State of Colorado certification, to the Division of Motor Vehicles and present it to a clerk. Step 3: Pay the required DMV fee ($50) for obtaining specialty plates. Your CU license plate will be sent via the U.S. Postal Service and arrive in 5 to 7 days.
Do I have to be an alum of CU to get a CU plate? No, anyone is eligible to get a CU plate.
How long do I own my CU plates for? As long as you keep them registered. Please note, if you move and discontinue your registration, you will have to go through this process again and make a new donation to obtain CU license plates if you move back to Colorado.
When can I get my plates and do I have to obtain them right away? If you would like to get your CU plates immediately, but don’t actually need to renew your license plates until a later date, the DMV will prorate the registration fee for the time remaining until your registration expires.
Can I pay for two vehicles on one application? No, you must complete a separate application for each vehicle you want to register with CU license plates.
Can I purchase CU plates for another person as a gift? Yes, you can purchase CU license plates as a gift. When filling out the donation information on the CU Foundation website, list the recipient’s name in the “Gift Comments Box” and the “Vehicle Title Name Box.” You will then need to send the email confirmation to the recipient and they can complete the process at the DMV.

This fund helps students in the DC area attend CU Boulder. Once the CU Boulder Alumni Association receives confirmation of your donation, we will send you an application form for the Maryland DMV along with a letter confirming your donation. Fill out the application form for your CU license plates. Take the completed application form and the letter confirming your scholarship donation to the your local DMV to complete your registration and purchase of CU license plates in Maryland!

Show off your Buffs pride in the Lone Star State! What you need to know about the Texas program: It does not matter when your registration is due, you can order your CU plate at any time. Prices start as low as $50! Save up to 40 percent when choosing a 5-year plate term. A portion of your license plate purchase will benefit the University of Colorado Boulder Alumni Association. All CU plates can be personalized in Texas.
What if I already have a specialty license plate through My Plates?
You can simply restyle your specialty license plate with a one-time charge and apply the remainder of your contract to the Forever Buffs license plate.
Can I get personalized Forever Buffs license plates?
Yes! There is an option to customize your license plate number with the Forever Buffs plate.
What if I have a personalized license plate number through the state of Texas?
You can transfer that personalized number to a Forever Buffs license plate once My Plates confirms that you are the owner of that personalized number. However, you must contact the My Plates call center at 1-888-769-7528 to complete this type of order.
