Hodgkins Selected To Play At 120th U.S. Amateur

July 24, 2020 | Women's Golf

BOULDER — University of Colorado senior Kirsty Hodgkins has been invited to play at the 120th U.S. Women's Amateur, August 3-9, at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

Hodgkins, a native of Brisbane, Australia, is one of 132 players in the prestigious field which contains 13 USGA Champions. The field is comprised entirely of exempt players due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Normally they have qualifying across the country, and she would have had a very good chance at that. Now they just have limited it to selection, the best players in the world, and she was fortunate enough to get a spot," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said.

On July 16, Hodgkins won the 105th CGA Women's Match Play Championship against former Buff Erin Houtsma, which was a great tune-up as the U.S. Amateur will follow a similar format.

After the U.S. Amateur, Hodgkins will return to Boulder for her fifth season of eligibility with the Buffs. She chose to use the additional year of eligibility the NCAA and CU extended her last spring when the pandemic put an early end to what she thought was her final season in March. She stayed in Boulder instead of trying to return to Australia this summer and has spent time working on her golf game and has been working as a research assistant on campus.

"Kirsty has so much passion and desire for the game," Kelly said. "She is such a hard-worker. We are very happy to have her back for another year."

The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship was first conducted in 1895 as one of the USGA's first three championships. After two rounds of stroke play on Aug. 3-4, the top 64 players will advance to the match-play portion of the championship. Match-play rounds will air on Golf Channel beginning on Aug. 5.
