Pride flagsFriday marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which began on June 28, 1969, after New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar popular among the gay community. The riots are often seen as a catalyst for the modern gay rights movement.

Scarlet Bowen, director of education for CU Boulder’s Center for Inclusion and Social Change, is available for media interviews. She can discuss the historical significance of the riots and their influence on modern celebrations of Pride Month. Bowen is the former director of the Gender and Sexuality Center and has taught LGBTQ studies courses.
