[5:05 p.m. | Monday, Nov. 2, 2026]

It is with great sorrow that CU Boulder confirms Luca Hanlon, a second-year media production student in the College of Communication, Media, Design and Information, was identified by the Boulder County Coroner as the victim who died in an off-campus shooting on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The Dean of Students Office and Office of Victim Assistance are working together with the CU Boulder Police Department and Boulder Police Department to communicate with and support the family and all students, faculty and staff impacted by this news.

As we continue to grieve this tragic loss on our campus, we request continued respect for the privacy of Luca’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.

We are grateful to the Boulder Police Department for its swift response in identifying and arresting an 18-year-old non-affiliate on murder charges in connection with Saturday’s fatal off-campus shooting in the University Hill neighborhood. We also thank our officers with the CU Boulder Police Department for their tireless work to support the BPD investigation, which remains ongoing, and to all those who provided information that led to this arrest. Violence in any form has absolutely no place in society.

Our hearts remain with the family and friends of the student who died, the injured and all those impacted by this tragedy. We ask that the privacy of the victims and their families and loved ones be respected during this difficult time.

To our campus community: We are here to support you. We encourage any student, faculty or staff member affected by this traumatic event to reach out to the Office of Victim Assistance at 303-492-8855 should you need someone to talk to. Students may also contact the Dean of Students office at deanofstudents@colorado.edu for additional support.
