CU Boulder begins project to define shared values

CU Boulder is launching a project to build consensus around a set of shared values that will guide how university communities achieve CU Boulder’s mission, vision and institutional priorities. Co-facilitated by Sonia DeLuca Fernández, senior vice chancellor for leadership programming and support, and Jon Leslie, vice chancellor for strategic communications, the project will begin to engage campus leadership and shared governance groups in November.

This work is part of the rollout of the university’s new framework for engaging the mission, vision, institutional priorities and objectives that began at the start of the 2025–26 academic year. A number of existing and prior efforts (including the Colorado Creedfreedom of expression principles and shared equity leadership values) will be reviewed and refined during a campus input process kicking off in November.

Campus values will be developed, reviewed collaboratively

A draft of shared values will be developed collaboratively with campus leadership and shared governance groups. Input will be gathered from broader campus communities during the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters via multiple feedback channels.

Based on this input, the shared values will be revised and prepared for broader adoption beginning in spring 2026.

Campus values will serve as a reference point, help to shape campus culture

Once finalized, these shared values will serve as a reference point for CU Boulder’s ongoing strategy, prioritization and decision-making. They will also help shape the campus culture and clarify the types of behaviors and outcomes our university communities aim to support in alignment with CU Boulder’s public research mission.

Input sessions planned for November and December

DeLuca Fernández and Leslie will conduct input sessions with CU Student Government, Graduate and Professional Student Government, Boulder Faculty Assembly and Staff Council leadership in November and December.
