Community Safety Official

You may not have noticed them before, but the CU Boulder Police Community Safety Officials serve a very important role in providing a safe campus for our students, faculty and staff.

The Community Safety Officials, or CSOs as they are commonly known, provide civilian security services in all academic and administrative buildings across campus, by providing high-visibility patrols, ambassadorship to resources across campus, crime deterrence education, security for special events and much more. In fact, in just the first two months of 2020, the CSO division processed 927 event security requests.

In 2020, CSOs responded to 704 service requests. These ranged from open door assists to criminal mischief, trespassing, welfare checks, medical issues and suspicious persons. CSOs also conducted 43,000 building checks, which entail patrolling an entire building to ensure it is secure and connecting with CU affiliates inside. The CSO unit averages 28 miles patrolling on foot each day—more than 7,800 miles in one year.

The work CSOs do each and every day is vital to the safe and smooth operation of the CU Boulder campus, and we are so thankful for their dedication to our community and the safe operation of the university.
