The University Libraries is excited to partner with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement (ODECE) this fall to offer multiple hour-long virtual workshops on how to facilitate conversations about race and racism with young children.
The Anti-Racist Parenting workshops will provide initial ideas of how to use children’s books and offer space for parents and caregivers to share their own tips and roleplay conversations.
“The biggest reason for these workshops is this political moment and ongoing police violence and resistance,” Education Librarian Linds Roberts explains. “Many parents and caregivers are struggling to discuss these important issues with children, especially young children.’
The Children’s and Young Adult Collection (CYAC) is a teaching and browsing collection located in Norlin Library. It contains over 5,000 materials created to support the CU Boulder School of Education and, more broadly, children and young adults in the community. The materials focus on a wide variety of topics, including racial and ethnic diversity.
The Anti-Racist Parenting workshop will be facilitated by Vanessa Santiago Schwarz, an assistant teaching professor of equity, bilingualism, and biliteracy in the School of Education.
