The Center for Research Data & Digital Scholarship (CRDDS) is hosting all learning opportunities online this semester, including a new workshop series called Method of the Month (MoM). MoM workshops will focus on the larger procedures of data collection and analysis to serve as foundational knowledge for the tools.
“People typically come to CRDDS for tool-specific help and there can be a knowledge gap,” explains CRDDS director for Digital Scholarship and Digital Scholarship Librarian Nickoal Eichmann-Kalwara. “Understanding the methods behind their approach is part one, because it will determine the types of questions researchers may ask and how it will shape their data for visualization and analysis. Whether it’s Digital Humanities or data science, the tools may change, but the methods less so.”
The MoM for September, Geospatial Data & Visualization, is led by Earth, Environment and Geospatial Librarian Philip White. GIS is a scientific framework for gathering, analyzing, and visualizing geographic data to help people make more informed decisions. This month, CRDDS is offering GIS workshops on Tools for Geospatial Analysis, Finding Geospatial Data and Principles of Map Design.
Each month focuses on a different topic and many of the workshops are shorter—30 minutes total—to help prevent “zoom fatigue.”
In addition to MoM, CRDDS offers a full range of other workshops on coding, data management, digital humanities, copyright and publishing to support both university and community members working and learning remotely.

Virtual drop-in consult hours are available each Tuesday from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. or you can schedule a one-on-one consultation with a data expert.

All events are available via Zoom and are free and open to the public. For events that require registration, registrants will receive a reminder email before the event, with the Zoom link and Meeting ID.
