There’s a lot going on in the world, and even though it may feel overwhelming, there are things you can do to make a difference. Here are some ways you can support your community right now.

Support causes you care about

Finding a place or cause to volunteer or donate to can take time and a little bit of research. We’ve put together some steps to help you get started.

Identify why you want to give or volunteer

Whether it’s your time or your resources, figuring out what will be meaningful for you can help you narrow down how you want to offer your support. Is it important to you to make an impact on a specific social or environmental issue? Are you looking for experience or to build connections in your community?

Make a list of issues you care about

Once you have your list, finding an organization that fits with some of the items on your list will be a lot easier. There are many national and local databases that will give you hundreds of nonprofits and community-based organizations to choose from.

Check the organization’s website

Whether you’re planning to volunteer or are able to donate money, supplies, clothes or household goods, check the organization’s website for specific requirements and information.

Additional ways to give back

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to get involved with your community. This could be helping out a neighbor or giving time to a local organization. There are lots of ways you can contribute to make a difference.

Many organizations are looking for volunteers to assist with administrative tasks, translations, photography, marketing, etc. You can help in different ways at a local food bank, volunteer to grocery shop for seniors or contact your local community garden to support their efforts.

Shop local

There are a lot of benefits to supporting local businesses. When you buy locally your money stays within the community, you help keep jobs in your area and you support a great cause. We’ve put together a list of how you can help enrich your own community.

  • Visit a farmers market in your area or look for local produce at the grocery store. You can also try take out from a locally owned restaurant or coffee shop near you.
  • Try buying your next outfit from a local shop. Instead of going to a big chain store, look for a store that is conscious about how they make their clothes or that produces clothes within your state. Thrift stores can also be a great way to save money and support local efforts in your area.
  • Check out a store that sells products from local artists. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind art piece or gifts for friends or family, check out small shops in your area. Boulder has many stores that offer handmade and locally produced items.

Remember to give yourself the space to try out different things. Whether you volunteer for a one-time event or on a regular basis, or are able to donate to your favorite cause, your support makes a difference.
