Here’s some CU news you can use: Watch your driving after the switch to daylight saving time; cloud seeding a snowstorm; and the state of music from the Beatles to Gen Z in this week’s research roundup.

‘Spring forward’ to daylight saving time brings surge in deadly crashes

Fatal car accidents increase 6% in the week following the switch to daylight saving time, according to new CU Boulder research.

What we learned:

  • Fatal accidents increase 6% in the workweek following the spring switch to daylight saving time.
  • For people living in the western edge of their time zone, the increased risk is higher.

Let it snow: Researchers put cloud seeding to the test

For the first time, researchers have used radar and other tools to accurately measure the volume of snow produced through cloud seeding.

What we learned:

  • Researchers have used radar and other tools to measure the volume of snow produced through cloud seeding.
  • They analyzed three different cloud seeding events in western Idaho, finding they produced a total of about 282 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of water.
  • The results could help states like Colorado and Idaho decide whether cloud seeding might be an effective tool for addressing water shortages.
