Picking research topics, citing sources, and proofreading for grammatical errors can be trying, especially in light of finals week.

That’s why professional and peer writing tutors and librarians will be available on Monday, Dec. 9 to work with students as part of this fall’s Write-In event at Norlin Library.

“End of term writing projects are often stressful, daunting, and completed in solitude,” Teaching & Learning Specialist Daniel Johnston with the Libraries said. “We aim to not only provide a space where students can collaborate with professional tutors and librarians, but also to provide a space where students can engage with a community of peers and fellow writers.”

Daniel Johnston works with a student at a previous Write-In event.

With support from writing and information professionals and their peers, students can work to develop, edit and refine their end-of-term writing projects.

Eric Klinger, the Writing Center’s Associate Faculty Director said that by making access to writing support simple, the event meets students at their point of need, at the right moment.

“During finals, Norlin tends to look a bit like DIA with students camped out in every corner studying and writing papers,” he said. “The Write-In offers a welcoming social space for them to drop in for some snacks, hot cocoa, and writing advice.”

The Write-In also offers extra motivation for students during a busy time in the semester.

Students from all disciplines with a writing project at any stage of development are encouraged to stop by E113 in Norlin Commons any time from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., or 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. No RSVP required!

This event is sponsored by both the Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU) of the University Libraries and the Writing Center, part of the Program for Writing and Rhetoric (PWR).

“We hope that this will show students that they are not alone at any point of their academic tenure, and that the libraries and the Writing Center hope to partner with students on their projects throughout the academic year,” said Johnston.
