Pac-12 Announces Early Season, Weeknight Game Times, TV

May 30, 2019 | Football

BOULDER — The University of Colorado now knows its game times and television arrangements for the first three football games this fall, as well as two Friday night games later on the schedule, as the Pac-12 Conference on Thursday released the information for 44 games for the upcoming 2019 football season.

All five games are slated for national television broadcasts.

Colorado's season opener on Friday, Aug. 30 against the Colorado State Rams in the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown will be televised nationally by ESPN; kickoff is set for 8:10 p.m. MDT at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver.  It will be the 25th straight year that one of the nation's most underrated rivalries will be televised on an either a regional or national basis, and for the fifth time on ESPN.  It will also be the 19th, and for the time being, final meeting between the rivals in Denver, where the Buffaloes own a 12-6 edge.  CU has won four straight in the series, the first run of four in a row in the series since 1987-98 when Colorado won eight straight between 1987 and 1998.  CU leads the series overall, 66-22-2, including last year's 45-13 win.

It will also be the ninth game in CU football history that will be played in the month of August, with the Buffs owning a 4-3-1 record in those contests, including a 3-2 mark with the Rams.

CU will open its 96th season at Folsom Field against an old rival dating back over 120 years on Saturday, Sept. 7 as the Nebraska Cornhuskers will visit Boulder for the first time since 2009.  Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. MDT and FOX will televise the game to the nation.  The schools from neighboring states first met in 1898 and played a total of seven times before CU joined the Big Seven Conference in 1948; the next 63 games in the series were all conference affairs.  This will be just the second non-conference game between the two since 1907, with Nebraska owning a 49-19-2 lead in the series; the Buffs came away with a 33-28 win in the renewal of the rivalry last year in Lincoln.

The following Saturday will be the long-awaited renewal of another rivalry as the Air Force Falcons will come to Boulder for the first time since 1973; kickoff has been set for 11:00 a.m. and it will be televised nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.  CU leads the all-time series by a 12-4 margin, including a thrilling 28-27 win the last time the teams met on Oct. 5, 1974 in Colorado Springs.

When the two last played some 45 years ago, All in the Family was the No. 1 television show, The Taking of Pelham 123 was the top movie, and Olivia Newton-John's I Honesty Love You ruled the roost on the music charts.  The Denver Broncos were in just their 15th year of existence, and the Denver Rockets had just changed their name to the Nuggets and were set to open their next-to-last season in the American Basketball Association.  The baseball and hockey teams were competing on the highest level of the minor leagues, the Denver Bears in the American Association in baseball and the Denver Spurs in the Central Hockey League.  CU was in the Big Eight Conference and Air Force was an independent.

The Pac-12 Conference opener for the Buffaloes will be at Arizona State on Saturday, Sept. 21, the first weekend of the season where Saturday game times will be announced usually 12 days in advance, though on occasion it can be as few as six days.  All remaining games are on the selection menu of the Pac-12's television partners, ESPN-ABC, FOX Sports-FS-1 and the Pac-12 Networks.

Two conference games preselected for Fridays also have been assigned kickoff times and TV rights.  Colorado's game at the Oregon Ducks on Oct. 11 will kickoff at 8 p.m. MDT and with FS-1 to carry the game; two weeks later on Oct. 25, the Southern California Trojans visit Boulder with ESPN2 to televise the contest in a 7:00 p.m. MDT kick.
